The Handy Manners Name
I wanted to do something different with my handyman business. I mean, it’s a pretty simple business to get into, but I wanted to focus on taking care of people. I believe that if you take care of people, then the business will prosper. There’s not a lot of margin in this business, so most guys try to squeeze both the customers and their workers to get the most out of it. That didn’t make sense to me. It doesn’t cost anything to treat customers well, but it can make a big difference in prompt payment and referrals. And you depend on your workers to take care of gear and represent the company to customers, so I wanted to treat my staff well too.
So I wanted a name that communicated this philosophy of just taking care of people. I started out calling the business “Gentleman Property Maintenance”. That seemed to work. But when I started searching web domains and the like I found that, while Gentleman Property Maintenance was available, there were lots of other companies and web sites that included the word “Gentleman” in the name. What troubled me is that they were all involved in business that I really didn’t want my company associated with. So Gentleman Property Maintenance became Handy Manners, the handyman company that really takes care of people.
